First Scientific Meeting of CEI Moncloa

The 24th of February was presented in Madrid the Agri-Food and Health cluster, one of the principal European axis in R+D+I in sustainable agricultural production, quality and food safety and health and animal-welfare. The event took place in the First Scientific Meeting carried out by the Campus of International Excellence (CEI) on the 23th, 24th and 25th of February. The thematic session of the cluster was in the Assembly Hall of Agronomic Engineers of the UPM, which was led by their coordinators, the director of VISAVET Centre, Lucas Domínguez Rodríguez (UCM) and the professor Margarita Ruiz-Altisent (UPM).

     The inauguration of the Meeting was in the Assembly Hall of the Dentistry School at the Complutense University. This event is the presentation the common lines between the five clusters, which participate actively in the Campus of International Excellence. The presentation was led by Juan Jose Moreno Navarro (general director of the university policy of the Ministry of Education) and the vice-chancellors Carlos Andradas Heranz (UCM) and Gonzalo León Serrano (UPM). Then, the General Coordinators Mª Luisa Osete López and Mª Inés Mínguez Tudela, who deal specifically with the presentation of the activities in R+D+I of the Campus International Excellence. In general lines the structure of the project has 27 basic actions, and 33 thematic actions, which are defined by the five clusters; Global Change and New Energy, Materials for the Future, Agri-Food and Health, Innovative Medicine and Heritage. Mª Inés Mínguez presented th Web of the Campus of International Excellence. This page is designed as a multimedia platform with TV, Radio and Online press.

     The presentation of the Agri-Food and Health cluster had two different parts. The first session was in the morning in the Assembly Hall of the Dentistry School (UCM), and in the evening at five o´clock took place the meeting of the different groups of the Agri-Food and Health cluster, in the Assembly Hall of Agronomic Engineers of the UPM.

At ten o´clock started the professor Malcolm Mitchell of the Scottish Agricultural College-SAC with a conference about “Talking animals -understanding their needs- A multidisciplinary approach&rdquot;. Then, the coordinators of the Agri-Food cluster spoke briefly to explain the strongholds of this cluster. Margarita Ruiz-Altisent showed the priority lines of the committee advisor of this cluster.

Lucas Domínguez emphasized the existence of a clear complementarity between the two universities, and the director of VISAVET Centre, remarked the attention and updating that the installation and infrastructures do constantly need.

     The thematic session of the Agri-Food and Health cluster started at 17 o´clock in the Assembly Hall of Agronomic Engineers of the UPM. The presentation was led by the coordinators of this cluster; Lucas Domínguez Rodríguez and Margarita Ruiz Altisent, with Jesús Vázquez Minguela director of E.T.S.I. Agronomic (UPM), Victor Sánchez Girón Renedo, deputy director of the research and doctorate departments of the E.T.S.I. (UPM) and Joaquín Goyache Goñi, dean of the Veterinary Medicine Faculty (UCM).

The first debate table was about Animal production and health and Vegetable production systems. Their speakers were Clemente López Bote (UCM), Isabel Bardají (UPM) and Antonio Vallejo (UPM).

After the break for a coffee and the visit of the posters that were made by the integrated groups of the cluster it started the second round table about Technology in Agro-food, Hygiene and food-safety. The speakers were Pilar Barreiro Elorza (UPM), Isabel Cambero Rodríguez (UCM), Teresa García Lacarra (UCM) and Margarita Fernández-Regatillo (INIA).

This second table was of the same structure that the previous one. In addition, Pilar Barreiro launched an opinion poll to get feedback from the different groups who are actively participating in this cluster.

The session finished with the presentation of the web page of the Agro-Food and Health cluster by Mª Concepción Porrero Calonge of the VISAVET Centre (UCM). This Web page has been developed by the Computers and Communication Service of this Centre https://www.visavet.es/en/cei/. Ms. Porrero invited the spectators to "improve the application”. The main idea is to give continuity to this tool for keeping updated the information of the research groups.
