Equine Herpesvirus type 1 and type 4 as a cause of abortion

Equine Herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) and type 4 (EHV-4) are common viruses distributed worldwide which can cause abortion in mares, neonatal disease and death. In this article we summarise the initial measures to be taken in a premises with a suspicion of abortion or neonatal disease caused by EHV-1/EHV-4, as well as the samples to be taken, the tests to be carried out for the diagnosis and the control measures to be implemented once the diagnosis has been confirmed.
