In spite of the efforts invested for eradication of animal tuberculosis in Spain, there are still areas in which the disease persists. Here we summarize the results of the Eratub project (Universidad de Leon-Universidad Complutense) regarding the characterization of the problems hampering the progress of the tuberculosis eradication programs in both areas of high and low prevalence in Spain. The objectives achieved include estimating the performance of diagnostic tests at the herd and individual level in different situations, the assessment of the efficacy of new tools for the diagnosis and prevention of infection in wildlife, the identification of predictive factors for chronically/ recurrently infected herds, and the implementation of whole genome sequencing technologies for the study of the epidemiology of the disease in domestic and wild animals. Our results demonstrate the need of taking into consideration the epidemiological context when implementing and interpreting the measures contemplated in eradication programs, and of their constant evaluation and improvement considering new evidences
