Summary

Antimicrobials are essential for treatment of certain infections in animals, however their use for this purpose should not compromise public health. Therefore, these drugs must be used prudently, that is in ways that maximize therapeutic efficacy but minimize resistance impacts. In order to truly achieve prudent use at the national and international levels, important decisions must be taken by regulatory authorities and other organizations that are responsible for veterinary use of antimicrobials. There is wide international consensus that the risk analysis framework is the best approach to support this type of decision-making, with risk assessment providing the scientific foundation
