Summary

The purpose of this workshop is to develop a strategic framework and a research agenda for the implementation of bovine tuberculosis control programs in developing countries (especially in geographies of interest to BMGF in Africa and South Asia) in which the disease is endemic in domesticated animals.

This workshop is an inaugural effort wherein a highly select group of less than 30 leading scientists from around the world are being convened address four areas of relevance to the control of bovine TB in developing countries including:

1) Animal models for bTB vaccine development
2) Diagnostic tests for disease detection and control in low and mid-income countries
3) bTb vaccination strategies for developing nations
4) Control strategies for low and mid-income countries with endemic bTB

Expected outputs will include a white paper as well as a peer-reviewed opinion article that we would like to see published in a high-profile journal. In addition, this convening will serve to launch the new Global Research Alliance for bovine TB (GRAbTB) – a BBSRC supported consortium that is being brought together for the purpose of fostering research cooperation and technical exchange on bovine Tb control
