Giulia Franzoni. Cytokines in viral infections: an update

Cytokines are small proteins that play an essential role in controlling the homoeostasis of the immune system. They are produced and released by immune cells in response to various stimuli, such as viral infections or other forms of cellular stress. Cytokines can act as protectors against both intrinsic and extrinsic dangerous stimuli, but an exaggerated immune system activation (with associated excessive cytokine release, “cytokine storm”) can also threaten the host.
Different types of cytokines exist, such as interferons, interleukins, chemokines, mesenchymal growth factors, tumor necrosis factor family and adipokines. They are important diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic agents in diseases.
In this talk, the most important cytokines will be described, as well as techniques to investigate them. Finally, the role of selected cytokines during ASFV infection will be described.
