Immunohistochemical Study of the Epidermal Growth Factor, Transforming Growth Factor Alpha and the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor in the Cystic-Endometrial-Hyperplasia-Pyometra Complex in the Bitch

Poster communication in I Congreso Internacional AERA-BAS

Cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra (CEH-P) is a common cause of death in the middle-aged bitch. It involves thickening of the endometrium, followed by atrophy as the condition progresses. Despite its high incidence the aetiology of CEH remains largely unknown. A recent study revealed increased uterine cell proliferation following EGF treatment in mice, suggesting EGF participation in CEH (Shiraga M, et al., 2000: Zool Sci 17, 661–666). However, the localization of the EGF system has not been described in the uterus of the bitch. The aim of this study was to determine, by immunohistochemis… Read more

Mycobacterium peregrinum infection in farmed European tench (Tinca tinca L.)

Investigation article published in Veterinary Microbiology

This work is the first description of Mycobacterium peregrinum as an etiological agent for mycobacteriosis in farmed fishes. We report the mycobacterial infection in farmed European tench (Tinca tinca L.) which was confirmed by culture, molecular identification methods (PCRs aimed at 16S rRNA, rpobeta and hsp65 sequencing), and histopathology. Since M. peregrinum infection has been described in humans, their clinical significance in fishes should be considered of healthcare interest. With this case report, we also show that a multidisciplinary approach was needed to overcome difficulties assoc… Read more

Prevalence and diversity of integrons and associated resistance genes in faecal Escherichia coli isolates of healthy humans in Spain

Investigation article published in The Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the prevalence and diversity of integrons in faecal Escherichia coli isolates from healthy humans in Spain. METHODS: One hundred E. coli isolates were obtained in Levine agar plates from faecal samples of 100 healthy humans during March to October 2007. Susceptibility to 16 antimicrobial agents was determined by the disc diffusion method. The presence and characterization of class 1, 2 and 3 integrons, as well as the presence of other antimicrobial resistance genes, were performed by PCR and DNA sequencing. RESULTS: Integrases associated with class 1 and/or class 2 integ… Read more
