The science in their hands

New post in Blog Madri+d de Seguridad Alimentaria y Alimentación

Many of them have already realized selectivity and are on the prelude of starting their studies. Almost all have it clear, studies the branch of health science. Medicine, the favorite among all of them. Thus, students who took part in the first edition of the Summer Science Campus, tell their stories and pass on the students of this second edition, before and after they assumed to live for 14 days with the scientific work… Read more

Bacteria will finish win the war, due to the resistance to antibiotics

Interview in A hombros de gigantes of Radio 5. RNE. Corporación RTVE

The World Health Organization has showed its concern over the increasing resistance of antibiotics. He says that every year four and a half of Europeans die by Hospital-Acquired Infections. We discussed this phenomenon with Bruno González Zorn, a researcher at the VISAVET Health Surveillance Centre of Compluense University, who has just been awarded by the Jaime Ferrán prize every two years by the Spanish Society of Microbiology the leading scientists in this field less than 40 years. ... Food and Bioprocess Technology

In vitro growth inhibition of food-borne pathogens and food spoilage microorganism by vitamin K5

Investigation published in Food and Bioprocess Technology

The study investigates the effectiveness of a synthetic vitamin analogue (vitamin K5) for the growth inhibition of a total of 14 bacterial pathogens, spoilage-inducing bacteria and three spoilage-inducing molds that were tested during this study. Bacterial growth inhibition by vitamin K5 and vitamin K5 combined with sodium chloride (NaCl) were tested by determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) using a broth microdilution method. Antifungal effects of vitamin K5 were determined by measuring the growth of three different spoilage molds on Malt agar plates containing different con… Read more

Una cerda paraliza el tráfico en la M-40

New post in SEVEMUR Blog

Read more

Evolution of integrons in Escherichia coli from swine and poultry

PhD Thesis defense by Mauricio Alejandro Marchant Mella at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid

Read more

Tuberculosis in goats: study of immune response and contributions to diagnosis

Javier Bezos Garrido defended the PhD Thesis at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid

The main objectives of this thesis are the study of the cellular mediated immune response against caprine tuberculosis and the assessment, in terms of sensitivity and specificity, of the tuberculosis diagnostic tests used for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in goats, in particular the single and comparative intradermal test (SIT and SCIT tests respectively) and the IFN-y assay. Regarding the diagnostic tests, sensitivity and specificity in different epidemiological situations, the effect of different technical factors on the results of the IFN-y assay and the diagnostic interference caused by C.… Read more

Assessment of in vivo and in vitro tuberculosis diagnostic tests in Mycobacterium caprae naturally infected caprine flocks

Investigation published in Preventive Veterinary Medicine

Caprine tuberculosis in Spain is mainly caused by Mycobacterium caprae although the progression of the disease and lesion severity is similar to that caused by Mycobacterium bovis. In this study, the sensitivity of the gamma-interferon (IFN-γ) assay using an antigen cocktail containing early secretory antigenic target-6kDa (ESAT-6) and culture filtrate protein 10 (CFP-10) peptides for stimulation was determined and compared with those obtained in single intradermal tuberculin (SIT) and single intradermal cervical comparative tuberculin (SICCT) tests and IFN-γ assay using purified pro… Read more

Streptococcus porcorum sp. nov., isolated from domestic and wild pigs

Investigation article published in International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology

Seven isolates of an unidentified Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus-shaped organism isolated from domestic and wild pigs, were characterized by phenotypic and molecular genetic methods. Based on cellular morphology and biochemical criteria the isolates were tentatively assigned to the genus Streptococcus, although the organisms did not appear to correspond to any recognised species. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that the unknown bacterium was phylogenetically closely related to, but distinct from Streptococcus suis (97.5% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The rpoB and sod… Read more

Epidemiology and Infection

Evaluating surveillance in wild birds by the application of risk assessment of avian influenza introduction into Spain

Epidemiology and Infection publish this investigation article

Early detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in its natural reservoirs is a prerequisite for preventing disease spread to humans. The risk of introduction of H5N1 HPAI was assessed in order to design a risk-based surveillance system in Spain. Areas at highest risk for H5N1 HPAI followed a northeast-southwest direction, with two significant clusters located in the north and the southwest of the country. Most (83%) of the veterinary units (VUs) obtained fewer samples than would have been expected if samples had been collected using a risk-based design. In October 2009, a HPAI outb… Read more
