Hallazgos clínicos, diagnóstico y tratamiento de un caso de cistitis sabulosa sin incontinencia urinaria en un caballo

Poster communication in XVIII Congreso Internacional de Medicina y Cirugía Equina

Read more

De dónde vienen y hacia dónde van las bacterias resistentes a los antibióticos en las ponedoras

Conference in Aviforum Puesta 2017

Read more

Genome comparison of erythromycin resistant Campylobacter from turkey identifies hosts and pathways for horizontal spread of erm(B) genes

Investigation article published in Frontiers in Microbiology

Pathogens in the genus Campylobacter are the most common cause of food-borne bacterial gastro-enteritis. Campylobacteriosis, caused principally by Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli, is transmitted to humans by food of animal origin, especially poultry. As for many pathogens, antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter is increasing at an alarming rate. Erythromycin prescription is the treatment of choice for clinical cases requiring antimicrobial therapy but this is compromised by mobility of the erythromycin resistance gene erm(B) between strains. Here we evaluate resistance to six antimicrobial… Read more

Diego Flórez Cuadrado

Genomic characterization and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter

PhD Thesis defense by Diego Flórez Cuadrado at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid

Bacteria of the genus Campylobacter, mainly C. jejuni and C. coli, represent the most frequent cause of gastroenteritis of alimentary origin worldwide. These microorganisms colonize the digestive tract of birds and mammals. The main route of infection for humans is through the consumption of contaminated poultry meat. The infection produced by Campylobacter is usually self-limiting but can occasionally produce complications that require antimicrobial treatment. Erythromycin is the main treatment of choice. Resistance to erythromycin in Campylobacter has been related to mutations in genes or… Read more

Proteomic characterisation of bovine and avian purified protein derivatives and identification of specific antigens for serodiagnosis of bovine tuberculosis

Investigation published in Clinical Proteomics

Bovine purified protein derivative (bPPD) and avian purified protein derivative (aPPD) are widely used for bovine tuberculosis diagnosis. However, little is known about their qualitative and quantitative characteristics, which makes their standardisation difficult. In addition, bPPD can give false-positive tuberculosis results because of sequence homology between Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) and M. avium proteins. Thus, the objective of this study was to carry out a proteomic characterisation of bPPD, aPPD and an immunopurified subcomplex from bPPD called P22 in order to identify proteins co… Read more

Development and evaluation of an interferon gamma assay for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in red deer experimentally infected with Mycobacterium bovis

Investigation published in BMC Veterinary Research

BACKGROUND: Red deer (Cervus elaphus) is regarded as an epidemiologically relevant host for Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) and closely related members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex that cause animal tuberculosis (TB). The standard antemortem screening test for the detection of TB in deer is the intradermal tuberculin skin test, but the detection of interferon-gamma (IFNγ) produced by white blood cells exposed to M. bovis antigens can be used as an alternative or supplemental assay in most TB eradication/control programs. This study aims to develop an in-house sandwich ELISA f… Read more

Streptococcus ovuberis sp. nov., isolated from a subcutaneous abscess in the udder of a sheep

Investigation article published in International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology

One unidentified, Gram-stain-positive, catalase-negative coccus-shaped organism was recovered from a subcutaneous abscess of the udder of a sheep and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Based on cellular morphology and biochemical criteria, the isolate was tentatively assigned to the genus Streptococcus, although the organism did not appear to match any recognized species. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparison studies confirmed its identification as a member of the genus Streptococcus and showed that the nearest phylogenetic relatives of the unknown coccus corresponded to Streptococcus m… Read more
