Microbial Genomics

Healthcare-related transmission of mobile genetic elements co-carrying blaNDM and 16S rRNA methyltransferase genes in multiple Enterobacterales

Microbial Genomics publish this investigation article

Aminoglycosides are used in the treatment of serious infections with Gram-negative bacteria, especially those resistant to beta-lactams and carbapenems. 16S rRNA methyltransferases (16S-RMTase) are capable of conferring resistance to nearly all aminoglycosides. They are sometimes detected in combination with bla NDM. This study describes the mobile genetic elements associated with bla NDM and 16S-RMTase (co-)carriage in Enterobacterales from Ireland in the period 2019-2023. All isolates (n=58) carrying both bla NDM and a 16S-RMTase gene between 2019 and 2023 were obtained from the CPE National… Read more

WiBISS: a tool to estimate avoided lost revenue of African swine fever wild boar vaccination at municipality level

Frontiers in veterinary science publish this investigation article

This study introduces the WiBISS model, a simulation tool designed to assess the economic and epidemiological impact of a hypothetical African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccination in wild boar in Northern Italy. Using real ASF outbreak data from January 2022 to June 2024, the model evaluates how prompt vaccination could reduce disease spread and economic losses. WiBISS integrates three modules: vaccination simulation, restriction zone estimation, and economic impact analysis. The first two use custom-built cellular automata (CA) in Python and ArcGIS Pro, modeling each ASF case as a cell that can be i… Read more

Primary leptomeningeal histiocytic lymphoproliferative disorder associated with SARS-CoV-2 brain infection in k18-hACE2 mouse: a case report

Laboratory Animal Research publish this investigation article

Background: Histiocytic proliferative disorders in the central nervous system are rare, and their potential association with viral infections remains largely unexplored. This case is relevant because it suggests a potential interaction between SARS-CoV-2 neuroinvasion and tumor development, providing insights into how viral infections might influence oncogenesis. Case presentation: A 4.5-month-old male k18-hACE-2 mouse, part of an experimental study of SARS-CoV-2, displayed a small mass in leptomeningeal area composed by neoplastic round cells. This process is associated with typical acute in… Read more

Evidence of ESBL plasmid transfer and selective persistence of multiple host-associated Escherichia coli isolates in a chicken cecal fermentation model

Investigation published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology

The guts of animals and humans harbor diverse microbial communities that are regularly exposed to bacteria originating from food, water, and their surroundings. Species such as Escherichia coli are adept at colonizing multiple hosts, along with surviving in the environment. By encoding pathogenic traits and transmissible forms of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), E. coli can also pose a zoonotic risk. Our understanding of the factors that govern host residency is limited. Here, we used a chicken cecal fermentation model to study survival and the AMR transfer potential of 17 host-associated exten… Read more

Forensic Veterinary Medicine in the Madrid region

The Animal Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Unit of the Visavet Centre at the Complutense University of Madrid joins the Network of Scientific-Technical Laboratories and Infrastructures of the Community of Madrid

The Animal Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Unit (SAP) of the Health Surveillance Centre (Visavet) at the Complutense University of Madrid has recently become part of the Network of Scientific and Technical Laboratories and Infrastructures of the Community of Madrid (REDLAB). This network brings together the region’s scientific and technical laboratories that promote knowledge transfer and support the scientific, technological, and industrial communities by providing specialized services.… Read more

Evolution of Suspected Cat Abuse Between 2020 and 2024 in the Community of Madrid (Spain)

Investigation article published in Animals

Animal abuse is a serious and underreported problem, with cats, particularly those living in colonies, being frequent victims. In Spain, reliable data on feline abuse are limited. This study evaluated the cause, manner and mechanisms of death from 53 cats over five years at the Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Unit of the VISAVET Health Surveillance Center in Madrid (Spain). More than half of the cats died from non-natural causes, including blunt force trauma, poisoning, and projectile injuries, while the remaining cats died from natural causes. Compared to a previous regional study, suspect… Read more
