A Novel Prototype African Swine Fever Virus DIVA (Differentiation Between Infected and Vaccinated Animals) Serological Assay Based on the Detection of Antibodies Against the pEP153R, eGFP, and p72 Proteins
Investigation published in Vaccines
Background/Objectives: African Swine Fever (ASF) is one of the most significant infectious diseases affecting both domestic pig and wild boar populations, leading to substantial economic and biosanitary consequences. In Europe, disease management relies on stringent biosecurity measures and surveillance through diagnosis, highlighting the urgent need for an effective and safe vaccine for ASF control. In this context, the VACDIVA project has generated several promising vaccine candidates, including those with the EP153R gene deleted and replaced by the eGFP reporter gene. Methods: In this study…

Integron Cassette Capture Chassis
PhD Thesis defense by Filipa Moutinho Trigo da Roza at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid
Integrons are genetic platforms that capture, stockpile, and rearrange integron cassettes (IC), which encode genes with diverse functions, including antimicrobial resistance, phage resistance, or metabolic functions. However—and despite their dissemination to the clinical setting trough plasmids—detecting ICs is still challenging, and many functions they encoded are still unknown.
To address these challenges, in this thesis we have developed a biotechnological tool to identify ICs independently of their sequence, phenotype, or genetic background. We have redesigned a class 1 integron to…

Reduction of Influenza A Virus Prevalence in Pigs at Weaning After Using Custom-Made Influenza Vaccines in the Breeding Herds of an Integrated Swine Farm System
Investigation published in Viruses-Basel
Vaccination is a common influenza A virus (IAV) control strategy for pigs. Vaccine efficacy depends on strain cross-protection and effective vaccination program implementation. We evaluated a multi-faceted IAV vaccination strategy which included (a) monthly surveillance of pigs at weaning, (b) selection of epidemiologically relevant strains from farms under surveillance, (c) updating IAV strains in custom-made vaccines, and (d) seasonal mass vaccination with custom-made vaccines given to sows in 35 farrow-to-wean farms within an integrated swine farm system. Reduction of IAV in pigs from vacci…

Source attribution of human Campylobacter infection: a multi-country model in the European Union
Investigation article published in Frontiers in Microbiology
Introduction: Infections caused by Campylobacter spp. represent a severe threat to public health worldwide. National action plans have included source attribution studies as a way to quantify the contribution of specific sources and understand the dynamic of transmission of foodborne pathogens like Salmonella and Campylobacter. Such information is crucial for implementing targeted intervention. The aim of this study was to predict the sources of human campylobacteriosis cases across multiple countries using available whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data and explore the impact of data availabilit…

DarÃo Cabañes (UCM): "En veterinaria forense faltan programas de formación especÃficos y accesibles"
Interview in ConSalud.es of ConSalud

Identification of putative volatile biomarkers of canine leishmaniasis in dogs breath and hair employing a novel algorithm for automated chromatographic peak detection and matching
Investigation published in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry
The analysis of the volatile compounds released by biological samples represents a promising approach for the non-invasive diagnosis of a disease. The present study, focused on a population of dogs infected with canine leishmaniasis, aimed to decipher the volatolomic profile associated with this disease in dogs, which represent the main animal reservoir for Leishmania pathogen transmission to humans. The volatiles emitted by the breath and hair of dogs were analysed employing the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. The acquired chromatograms were investigated using a novel …
