Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the main causative agent of acute hepatitis in humans. Nowadays hepatitis E is considered an important emerging zoonosis in developed countries where human cases are mainly related to animals, primarily pigs. The origin of this infection in humans seems to be the contact with infected animals and the consumption of raw or undercooked meat. HEV has been circulating in Spain since many years ago, but little relevant data is available about the presence of the HEV in the whole food chain.
