The disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is currently one of the greatest concerns worldwide. Considering the possible zoonotic origin of the disease, studying the susceptibility of different animal species is essential to establish preventive and control measures. In this bibliographic review, the main findings at both the experimental level and in studies of natural infection in various animal species are summarized, with special emphasis on pets. All the studies suggest that the role of companion animals in the pandemic is limited to being mere punctual hosts of the virus without too many consequences at the clinical and epidemiological levels. However, active surveillance should continue to be carried out in animals exposed to the virus, carrying out genomic studies to detect variants of concern or new variants. © 2024 by Elsevier Inc.
