Salmonella Choleraesuis is a swine-adapted serovar that can cause an often-fatal systemic disease in domestic pigs and wild boars and can also produce extraintestinal infections in humans. Though a significant problem for the swine industry in certain parts of the world, traditionally it has been rarely detected in domestic pigs in the European Union. However, several outbreaks affecting pigs and wild boars in several European countries, including Spain, have been recently described, sometimes involving strains with antimicrobial resistant (AMR) phenotypes. Here, we analyzed a selection of 80 S. Choleraesuis clinical isolates from domestic swine (Iberian and non-Iberian
breeds) and wild boar from multiple regions in Spain retrieved in the last 10 years to determine their resistance phenotype, virulence factors and genetic relatedness to characterize the apparent emergence of this pathogen in swine in the country
