Intoxications in domestic animals are common. Accidental ingestion of certain compounds that are palatable to animals by colour, taste, or odor, is a common cause of death. One such case is poisoning by consumption of antifreeze and its functional compound, ethylene glycol. This ingestion occurs accidentally since it has a sweet taste and is usually consumed voluntarily, especially by young dogs. However, cats are more susceptible than dogs, but less commonly affected.
Ethylene glycol has low toxicity but is rapidly absorbed in the digestive tract and excreted in urine. Within hours of ingestion, nervous signs are produced by severe metabolic acidosis, resulting from oxidation of some metabolites of ethylene glycol. These metabolites, if the animal survives the acidosis, end up producing after a few days an acute renal failure, from which the animal eventually dies.
We describe the macro and microscopic lesions observed in 8 cats from feline colonies referred to the Animal Pathology and Forensic Veterinary Service of the Visavet center between 2020-2024. The presumptive diagnosis can be made by observing the lesions induced in the kidney, especially the presence of calcium oxalate crystals in the lumen of the collecting tubules. The diagnosis is confirmed by toxicological analysis by detecting the compound or its metabolites in urine, blood or stomach contents
