Multiple primary malignant tumors (MPMT) / synchronous primary tumors phenomenon is rarely reported in Veterinary Medicine. A 17-year-old male Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) was found lethargic and ataxic in his exhibit. No previous clinical signs were reported by the keepers. The main findings during the physical exam were dehydration (10%), jaundice, abdominal distension and enlarged liver. Biochemistry values were remarkably altered such as TBIL 7 mg/dl, ALKP > 2400 U/L, BUN 145 mg/dl, K+ > 8,5, Phos 15.2 mg/dL. An exploratory laparotomy confirmed the suspicion of hepatic disease, and the animal was euthanized. The gross findings observed during necropsy were severe hepatomegaly (584 g.) with a heterogeneous pattern characterized by white flat or dark-red cystic lesions. The multifocal white flat lesions were also seen in the spleen. The jejunum wall was diffusely enlarged. Moreover, adrenal glands and kidneys were bilaterally increased in size and firmly adhered to the adjacent vertebrae. Histological and immunohistochemical (CD3, CD31, Ki-67, Pan CK AE1/AE3, Pax5, PGP9.5 and vimentin) studies revealed three different malignant neoplasia: hepatic and splenic hemangiosarcoma, intestinal lymphoma with hepatic metastases, and pheochromocytoma with local invasion and metastasis. This is the first report of MPMT phenomenon in the Asian small-clawed otter, and the first description of hemangiosarcoma and pheochromocytoma in Aonyx cinereus.
