Virulence genes in Escherichia coli isolated from cattle in Germany and Spain

Cattle are a recognized reservoir for pathogenic E.coli. Here, we developed a real-time assay for detection of nine E. coli virulence genes (VGs) (stx1, stx2, eae, ehxA, aggR, est, elt, bfpA, and pInvA) and four serotype-related genes (wzxO104, rbfO157, fliCH4 and fliCH7), to elucidate if cattle could be a reservoir for intestinal pathotypes typically associated with humans, such as the O104:H4 strain of the German outbreak
