Staphylococcus aureus is a relevant animal and human pathogen, which includes two subspecies: S. aureus subsp. aureus (traditionally associated with cutaneous, soft-tissue and systematic infections and food-borne disease in humans and mammary infections and other pathologies in animals) and S. aureus subsp. anaerobius (mainly associated with abscess disease in small ruminants). Both subspecies showed significant epidemiological and pathogenic differences being traditionally differentiated by the catalase activity (positive on S. aureus subsp. aureus and negative on S. aureus subsp. anaerobius) although the value of this tests is limited by the increasing detection of catalase negative S. aureus subsp. aureus isolates associated with human disease.
