Lactococcus garvieae is a pathogen of importance in the aquaculture of freshwater and marine fish. It is the etiological agent of lactococcosis, an acute, haemorrhagic septicaemia of fish. Lactococcosis primarily affects rainbow trout, as well as a broad spectrum of wild and farm fish species. L. garvieae also causes bovine mastitis, and it is considered an emerging zoonotic pathogen. Antimicrobials have been widely used to control L. garvieae infections although certain limitations on the efficacy of this approach have been observed under field conditions in part due to the emergence of resistant isolates.
