    Morphology

  • Adults: with no functioning mouthparts and an abdomen covered with yellow - orange hairs (bee-like appearance)
  • Eggs are attached in rows of six or more on individual hairs
  • Mature larvae are barrel-shaped and have a posterior spiracular plate with taxonomic value

    Cycle

  • Holometabolous with four stages (egg, larva, pupa and adult)
  • Only the larval stage is parasitic (organic migration)
  • Migratory path: between fascial planes of muscles and along connective tissue
  • Overwintering site: submucosa of the oesophagus
