Biography
Graduated with a Degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid (1996-2001). PhD in Veterinary Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) with a thesis on immunology and diagnosis of tuberculosis in goats (grade of cum laude) (2011).
Research stays at the University of Minnesota (USA), Animal Health Veterinary Laboratories Agency (Weybridge, United Kingdom), Carlos III Health Institute (Madrid, Spain), Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (Dublin, Ireland), and Central Institute for Animal Disease Control (Lelystad, Netherlands). Head of R&D at MAEVA SERVET SL with a Torres-Quevedo Contract from MINECO (2014-2017) and Juan de la Cierva researcher in the Department of Animal Health at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Madrid (2018-2019).
Member of the tuberculosis subgroup of the Task Force under the European Commission and the Science Oversight Group (SOG) of DEFRA. Participated as an expert for EFSA (design of experimental vaccination trials against tuberculosis in cattle in the United Kingdom) and in the evaluation of bovine tuberculosis eradication programmes for the European Commission.
Author of over 100 scientific publications (30% as first or last author) in international indexed journals (ORCID 0000-0003-1913-0545; Scopus 22833847400; h-index 29, Q1) and more than 300 communications in national and international conferences. Reviewer for scientific journals such as Transboundary and Emerging Diseases, Veterinary Microbiology, International Journal of Tropical Disease and Health, Research in Veterinary Science, International Journal of Veterinary Medicine: Research & Reports, and Vaccines, among others, and for scientific projects for ANEP, Czech Science Foundation, and FONCyT. Associate editor of the journals Frontiers in Veterinary Science: Epidemiology and Economics Section, International Journal of Veterinary Medicine: Research & Reports, American Journal of Animal, Veterinary Sciences, and Vaccines.
Significantly, I have been or am the principal investigator (PI) of the national project GoaTBfree (2020-2023) funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and PI and coordinator of the international project imdiTBap (ICRAD-AEI, 2023-2026) and of the contract with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to support the bovine tuberculosis eradication programme (2020-2022 and 2023-2025). Additionally, I have participated as a member of the research or working group in more than 30 research projects or contracts. I am an expert in animal experimentation and welfare (functions B, C, D, E and F according to RD53/2013).
Currently, I am Professor in the Department of Animal Health at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Madrid (UCM), Head of the Clinical Trials Service and researcher of the Health Surveillance Research Group at the VISAVET-UCM Centre (rated excellent by AEI) and Deputy Director of the EU-RL (European Reference Laboratory) for Bovine Tuberculosis.
