Molecular typing and anti-microbial susceptibility of clinical isolates of Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus from equine bacterial endometritis

The anti-microbial susceptibility and genetic diversity of 65 strains of Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus (Sez) isolated from mares presenting clinical signs of endometritis was determined by disk agar diffusion and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) methods, respectively. Overall, Sez isolates were susceptible to beta-lactams, enrofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and gentamicin. These anti-microbials could be recommended as empiric anti-microbial therapy in cases of endometritis caused by Sez. An unusual Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, rod-shaped bacterium isolated from different clinical samples from two monkeys (Callithrix geoffroyi) was characterized by phenotypic and molecular genetic methods. The micro-organism was tentatively identified as a Pseudomonas species on the basis of the results of cellular morphological and biochemical tests. Fatty acid studies confirmed this generic placement and comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies demonstrated that the unknown isolates were phylogenetically closely related to each other (100% sequence similarity) and were part of the `Pseudomonas fluorescens intrageneric cluster`. RATIONALE: The clinical features and outcome of macrolide-resistant Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease are not known. OBJECTIVES: Characterize patients, treatment, and isolates in macrolide-resistant MAC lung disease. Molecular epidemiology of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium bovis isolates with the same spoligotyping profile as isolates from animals

PCR-based characterization techniques have been adopted in most laboratories for Mycobacterium bovis typing. We report a molecular characterization of human multidrug-resistant M. bovis isolates and three bovine isolates that share the spoligotyping profile. The analysis of the direct repeat region showed that both groups differed in the presence of spacers not included in the current membrane. They were also distinguished by two out of the nine mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit variable-number tandem repeat loci tested, indicating that the human infection was not acquired from the cattle from which isolates were obtained. Three outbreaks of clostridial disease in ruminants were reported in Spain. Out of 202,525 animals in affected herds, 41,767 were infected and 22,189 died. Epidemiological investigation linked these outbreaks with vaccination with three different commercial anti-clostridial vaccines contaminated with Clostridium sordellii. Vaccines were produced by the same manufacturer. Listeria ivanovii differs from the human pathogen Listeria monocytogenes in that it specifically affects ruminants, causing septicaemia and abortion but not meningo-encephalitis.
