Winter disease outbreak in sea-bream (Sparus aurata) associated with Pseudomonas anguilliseptica infection
Aquaculture (Amsterdam, Netherlands) 156(3-4):317-326.
The nature of an outbreak of ‘winter disease’ affecting both juvenile and adult sea-bream (Sparus aurata) in several Iberian Peninsula farms from January to April of 1996 is described. The average mortality rate was approximately 10–15%, although in some fish farms mortality reached 30%. Pure cultures of aerobic Gram-negative filamentous rods were isolated from the kidney of diseased fish, as well as from some of the liver and ascitic fluid samples. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis identified the isolates from diseased fish as Pseudomonas anguilliseptica. The results of biochemical and physiological tests of clinical isolates and the type strain of P. anguilliseptica were entirely consistent with the genotypic identification. The isolation o… Leer más

Penetration of Listeria monocytogenes in mice infected by the oral route
Microbial Pathogenesis 23(5):255-63.
In this study, it is suggested that the Peyer`s patches are the most important point of entry of Listeria monocytogenes in the host after subclinical infection by the oral route. Microbiological, histopathological and ultrastructural evidence of infection was obtained in mice inoculated with a sublethal dose of 10(9) cfu. No mortality was observed. L. monocytogenes was isolated from the mesenteric lymph nodes from 6 hours post infection (hpi) through day 7 p.i. and from the liver and spleen from 24 h p.i. until days 5 and 7 p.i. respectively. Lesions were mainly restricted to the dome area of Peyer`s patches and consisted of a purulent to pyogranulomatous inflammatory reaction. Scarce and minor lesions were also observed in the mesenteric l… Leer más

Prolonged persistence of Listeria monocytogenes after intragastric infection in corticosteroid-treated mice
Veterinary Microbiology 58(1):79-85.
In an attempt to obtain a model more closely resembling natural listeriosis, we studied the course of infection in mice inoculated by the intragastric route with Listeria monocytogenes. Corticosteroid-treated, and untreated mice both developed subclinical infection without mortality, but faecal shedding and persistence of bacteria in the liver and spleen of corticosteroid-treated mice were significantly more protracted than in untreated mice. Untreated mice cleared the bacteria from their livers and spleens by day 5 postinfection (PI), whereas treated mice did not clear the organisms until 8-9 days PI. In untreated mice faecal shedding lasted 5 days PI, whereas in treated mice the organisms were recovered at significantly higher levels unti… Leer más

Corynebacterium mastitidis sp. nov., isolated from milk of sheep with subclinical mastitis
International Journal Of Systematic Bacteriology 47(4):1082-5.
Fourteen strains of a hitherto unknown catalase-positive, aerobic, gram-positive coryneformlike organism were isolated from the milk of sheep with subclinical mastitis from different regions of Spain. The strains phenotypically closely resembled one another and biochemically were similar to Corynebacterium urealyticum and Corynebacterium afermentans subsp. lipophilum. The results of chemotaxonomic investigations were consistent with membership in the genus Corynebacterium, and comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies showed that the unknown bacterium from sheep was indeed a member of the genus Corynebacterium. Within the genus Corynebacterium the new bacterium formed a distinct subline that exhibited > 4% sequence divergence with other … Leer más

Macrophages infected with bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) induce humoral response in rabbits
Veterinary Immunology And Immunopathology 58(3-4):309-20.
BLV is a lymphotropic retrovirus which infects mainly B-cells. However, the possible infection of cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage (M/M) might explain some aspects of the disease such as latency or disease progression. We infected sheep M/M with BLV either by culturing M/M with supernatant containing virus, or coculturing M/M with persistently infected cell lines. These BLV-infected M/M were inoculated into rabbits and the serological response was followed for two years. ELISA results using adsorbed sera showed a persistent production of specific antibodies from as early as the first week post inoculation. Two tests were used to detect the response against envelope glycoprotein gp51: Agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) and a virus neutr… Leer más

Detection of Listeria monocytogenes on selective media without subculturing in food processing plants
Archiv Für Lebensmittelhygiene 48(3):54-56.
Results of Listeria analysis in cheese, poultry and other samples from dairy and poultry processing plant (973 samples) using the overlay technique described by BLANCO et al. (1989) to detect and count haemolytic Listeria colonies are reported. The overlay technique was found to be specially useful to count and detect haemolytic Listeria (in most of cases L. monocytogenes) in situ, on the isolation selective agar, in samples with more than one species of Listeria (64 % poultry samples).… Leer más

The insertion element IS 6110 is a useful tool for DNA fingerprinting of Mycobacterium bovis isolates from cattle and goats in Spain
Veterinary Microbiology 54(3-4):223-33.
A total of 129 Mycobacterium bovis strains from 5 different Spanish locations were fingerprinted using the IS6110 repetitive element. We demonstrated the presence of multiple copies (from 2 to 13) of IS6110 in a large proportion (47.4%) of the M.bovis strains isolated from cattle and we showed that these strains can be successfully differentiated by means of the RFLP with IS6110. All of the M. bovis strains isolated from goats had multiple copies of IS6110 and 4 bands of 2, 1.7, 1.4 and 1.3 kb were common in all the caprine RFLP patterns. The caprine strains formed a clearly separate cluster from the bovine strains… Leer más
